Inspect the sealing rings, bushings, thrust washers, and Torrington bearings. Pay close attention to the location and orientation of any and all thrust washers during disassembly of the unit.Īs you disassemble your transmission, you want to closely inspect each part, looking for obvious damage, wear, or complete failure. Incorrect installation could cause catastrophic transmission failure. Torrington bearings will often only work correctly if installed in one direction. Typically, metal and plastic washers will have tabs or holes to retain them, if required. Some thrust washers are metal, some are plastic, and others are Torrington bearings. Thrust washers are used between any two components that will contact each other and rotate at different speeds. There are several basic rules for all automatic transmissions. Careful attention must be paid to the location and arrangement of the internal components. The unit may have also been apart before, and there is no guarantee that it was correctly re-assembled. If the unit has failed, you want to try to find out what failed and why it failed. While you are taking the unit apart, you must keep in mind that we are starting your overhaul procedure. Having the unit at waist level or slightly higher, and being able to rotate it, will greatly improve the rebuilding experience. Once you have found a suitable work area, the transmission should be held in some sort of holding fixture. You must pay very close attention to the valve body and the fasteners that attach it to the case, especially for the electronically controlled units, as several different length fasteners were used. The valve body can be left in place, and then carefully removed after removing the internals from the unit. One must keep in mind that when working with any year or model of the 700 transmission, you can remove all of the internal components down to the low/reverse apply piston without disturbing the valve body. Torrington bearings use tiny needle bearings between two metal halves (left). Some thrust washers are made of plastic (right), others are made of metal and may have a soft babbit or brass surface (center), others are the Torrington-bearing variety. Transmissions use thrust washers between components to allow them to turn at different speeds without wearing out their mating surfaces. You can copy and paste this link to share:

This Tech Tip is From the Full Book, GM AUTOMATIC OVERDRIVE TRANSMISSION BUILDER’S AND SWAPPER’S GUIDE. In reality, these transmissions can be correctly overhauled, and even upgraded, with a minimal amount of special tools and procedures. At a glance it all certainly seems complicated. Maybe it’s the complexity of the valve body, or host of internal components, sprags, planetary gears, clutch packs, etc. I have known some extremely talented mechanics, and most still stay far away from any automatic transmission work. Rebuilding automatic transmissions has always been an area of the automotive hobby that has typically been left to professionals and a rare few hobbyists.
